The "Johnny Cage" Execution
I'd like to briefly talk about what I call "The Johnny Cage Execution" also known as being "Johnny Caged" or simply put just "Caged".
Some of you might not know who Johnny Cage is. He's a character from the Mortal Kombat gaming franchise. He's actually a cool character to play as (in my opinion) who unfortunately got a bad rap in the first Mortal Kombat movie. He started out as the man you just couldn't stand, but throughout the course of the movie, he started to grow on people. And then by the end, he's one of the people you're cheering for to win. Well, in the sequel to the game-to-movie series.... he was killed in the very first scene. Not just killed. Executed. Ever since, I've picked up on "Caged" situations in movies, and it really annoys me when film makers pull these stunts to characters that are actually important and are in fact a BIG part of a franchise.
The two characters that always come to mind for me when explaining the "Caged" situations are as follows:
Cyclops in X-3. Though not exactly killed in the first scene, he's still killed so early in the movie that many fans just wonder why he was even in the movie to begin with. Cyclops, though not as popular as other notable X-Men characters with three claws on each hand, is still a very important and reconizable character in the Marvel universe. Also, I'd like to point out here that HAD they kept him alive, they could have possibly had a better storyline in the movie, playing off the Dark Phoenix Saga story arc and using some of the really great plot devices between Jean/Dark Phoenix and Scott/Cyclops.
The Comedian. Anyone who's seen the Watchmen knows what I'm talking about. Though I understand his murder is an integral part of the story and plot, it's still annoying as hell because over the course of the movie, in all of the flashbacks, I really grew to love the guy. And by the end of the movie, I was so pissed off that he was killed that I decided to write this up and file the death away on the "Caged" list.
So, anyone else have any senseless "Johnny Cage Executions" that they've noticed in movies or tv? (And no, the death of Ianto Jones doesn't count.)

and now, i'm crying. because one of my fave characters died. yeah, it's just a show, but i don't like to see Jack so sad... and Janto was a very fine thing indeed.
